Although we are lucky to have a location near to one of the darkest spots in the province, light pollution is still a growing concern.
From the start of the observations in the late sixties we do see a gradual increase in light pollution.
On a local scale we are in a constant state of alertness, and act if a significant new case of light pollution occurs.
The neighbours of the Observatory are cooperative in keeping their outdoor lights shielded in a way that there is not much emission to the night sky. Starting in January 2010, a light meter at the Observatory is continuous recording the brightness of the night sky.
We hope that the growing awareness of the problem results in large scale global action to stop the increase of light pollution.
Because hasn't every human being the right to have a clean sight at the overwhelming starry night sky?
